Subject: [*] f2c - Fortran to C converter
A week or so ago I wrote to the network asking about a fortran-to-C compiler
called f2c; f2c_5_92 is a port of the popular AT&T program that will convert
fortran (e.g., LINPACK, EISPACK, LAPACK, or whatever) into C or C++ code
suitable for use with Think C. The translated code uses some extra library
functions; these are included in the package. I ran the application on
a test program included with the distribution, and it seems to go o.k.
This submission is a binhexed, self-extracting archive. I am unaware of
any fee, shareware or otherwise.
Thanks to all who responded to my request, esp. to Alun Carr, for their help
in locating and acquiring this application.

Julian,
I know of only two sources of information on AppleScript. The first is a
HyperCard stack that describes AppleScript briefly. This stack comes with
the run-time version of AppleScript (available from APDA). The second is
the technical documentation that comes as part of the AppleScript
Programmer's Toolkit (also available from APDA).
Of these the information in the AppleScript Programmer's Toolkit is by far
the most usefull.

Subject: AppleTalk problem
On my desktop, I have a Mac Plus, a Mac IIsi and a laser printer, all
connected
with LocalTalk cable and AppleTalk. They all used to work together just fine,
sharing each other's hard disks and the printer, until something unidentified
occurred (probably a dumb mistake of mine, but unknown at this point).
Recently, after much inactivity, I tried to mount the IIsi disk from the
Plus.
I connected just fine (the IIsi showed me connected), but in the dialog box on
the Plus where it asks what I want to use (where I should see the IIsi hard
disk name), there was a blank - nothing to select.
I can connect and mount the Plus hard drive successfully from the IIsi to the
Plus - all works normally. Both can access the laser printer. Because the IIsi
shows the Plus connected when I am sitting on the empty dialog box, I know
that
the communication path is active. For whatever reason, the Plus can't see (or
is not being allowed to see) the hard drive on the IIsi. I have reviewed all
of
the obvious control panel settings on both machines, and everything is
identical.
Anyone have any clues to what I might have done to disallow the Plus from
mounting the IIsi drive? I can't think of any significant changes to either
environment in months, nor of any settings changes that might have caused
this,
so I'm looking for clues or ideas of what things to look at to shoot this
problem.
Any help or ideas appreciated. Please respond directly to me (not a general
interest question/answer): Ned Reinhold:Dloslv300:Xerox or Xerox Intelnet

Thanks.

Subject: biger pages (re) &graphic formats query
Hello there!
1. My previouse query was about printing biger pages
on the Laserter ps driver. I recieved several answers
which their writers were replyed separetely.
The most comprehensive answer received from
Don Markuson (dmm@tiger1.cv.com).(Thank you, Don.)
The briefest summary of that answer is that rev
. 8.0 of apple'sonday) comes with a PPD folder. The PPDs in this folder
contain printer specifparameters including Page
sizes other than the apple classic range.
Repairing the older versions of LW 7.x is more
clicated. Don sent me some clues about this
procedure, and i'm keeping it for a while, in
case sombody else wants it.
2. I have another qtion now.
Can anybody explain the differences between PICT
,TIFF and EPS formats?
I meen a "one above bozo" explanatiorefering to
pros arocess,like storage and
retrieval procedures, print quality and degradation,
tability to programs and devices, colour and grey

Subject: CrippleDrive (TM) NO! (I think) (C)
I must admit to being rather confused about what Apple's proposal is.
I don't mind if the machine has an eject button in addition to the current
Mac facilities. But if it means that I will have a very restricted choice
of future Macs to buy which enable me to handle floppies the natural way,
then I am goin to start to look at other platforms. What else is there out
there? How do Silicon Graphics, Next, DEC, HP handle floppies?
By the natural way, I mean
(a) I can drag the floppy icon to the wastebasket and it ejects
automatically.
(b) I can use the eject command from the menu and it ejects automatically.
(c) On restart and shutdown it ejects automatically.
(d) If an application (like an installer) wants a particular floppy, it can
eject any disk already there if it is not the correct one and ask for the
new one by name. And if it's not right, ask again.
(e) If I open etc. an alias for something that is on a particular floppy,
the system will eject any irrelevant floppies and ask for the new one
etc.
(f) etc.
It looks like Apple are backing off from abolishing 24 bit colour on their
machines, according to the "Cyclone" vapourings. Maybe they will back off
>From abolishing smart floppies.
Can any one give me a name and address or email address or real phone number
(no 800s - I'm in Europe and it is not possible to dial an 800 number
at any price from here) of someone important at Apple to bitch about this.
Er, peace.

The 4.0 drivers *still* have problems underlining on my system.
They miss underlines on characters at the end of words, and add
them spuriously. Had the same problem with the 3.9 drivers.
Grrr. This is with the following:
PB 100 8/40
System 7.0.1 w. Tuner 1.1.1
Word 5.1a
Suitcase 2.1 (and other inits)
Palatino 12 point, bold
Given that the 3.1 drivers work fine, I doubt it's an init
conflict. Has anyone else seen this? I'd love to use the new
drivers, since they seem to speed up greyscale printing, but no
way.

Subject: Floppy Eject buttons
A few people have said that the Mac 1.44 Meg format 3.5 inch disks are in
the MFM PC format anyway, so what is the worry?
Well, the worry is not how the disk is formatted, but how the OS interacts
with the disk drive: I like being able to insert a blank disk and have
AccessPC come up and ask me whether I wish to format it as Mac or PC, and
then the Mac part ask if I want it as double-sided or single-sided (for a
DD disk), or just format at (for an HD disk).
I like being able to drag a disk to the trash to eject it - including any
PC disks that are understood by AccesPC/PCExchange/DOSmounter.
As Larry Rymal says, the Atari/Amiga Mac emulators have had to deal with
this for years, but I disagree that they are 'painless'.
Surely the SuperDrives are not _that_ much more expensive than the other
type? (And I am not talking about the retail price that we pay for either
one.)

Subject: Jurassic Park comments...
This isn't really directed at anybody in particular, but the vidphone scenes
in
Jurassic Park that seem odd to us because we recognize the frame bar in the QT
frame are *exactly* the way I would do it if I were the production designer of
the film.
We are so close to the Mac interface that we would as a matter of course find
that interface a touchstone. But I challenge you to find 100 everyday folk
that
would even pick that out as a mistake, let alone a stumbling point in their
enjoyment of the movie.
On the contrary, IMHO having the frame bar in the scene adds to the depth of
the production values of the film, and the very fact that the frame bar
travels
as the character is speaking is viewer shorthand for a "high priced system"
where they must "pay by the second".
I'm sure that someone at Amblin Entertainment could be coerced to upload the
QT
movie...any volunteers to call?
BTW, congratulations are in order for Daniel Paul, whose sole function at
Apple
is to get Macs into films and TV. He is the main reason you see Macs on a lot
of sitcoms and in films like Single White Female and Jurassic Park. There are
even standards by which they allow Macs to be used (i.e. it was a close call
as
to whether or not they were going to let the "bad" robot have a Mac-based
interface - remember the skull instead of the Apple as the first menu icon in
the menu bar?) so that they can control the Mac's image on-screen.
As one who straddles the worlds of computing and entertainment, I think
Spielberg's production designer made just the right choice.

Subject: LaserWriter Pro 600 Questions
Hello friends,
I have a couple of questions about the LW Pro 600.
Using the LaserWriter Utility program, I changed the toner print density to
a lower value, but every time I turn the printer off and then back on, it
gets reset to the default 50% value. Is there a way to change it on a more
'permanent' way?
Another change I wanted to make was the default paper tray. I wanted to
have the default be the multipurpose tray, but the LW Utility doesn't let
me do that. However, if you print the configuration page, you'll see on the
lower left corner a box saying 'default paper tray: 0' as opposed to '1' (0
is the lower, 1 is the upper tray). That tells me that there *must* be a
way to make that change. Does anyone know how?
Thanks very much for your help.

Subject: Radius Monitor Question-Quick Decision Needed (Q)
I've just bought myself a Radius 21" greyscale monitor. It comes with
software that allows you to run it off the internal video on a
Quadra 700. However, the Quadra 700 doesn't recognize the monitor
until the Radius extension loads. This means, for instance, that one
never sees the Welcome to Macintosh message. More worryingly, it
means that you can't restart holding down the shift key to switch
extensions off - the computer restarts all right, but nothing appears
on the screen.
One solution is to spend another few hundred on a video board, making
my current investment in VRAM redundant. But the real question is whether
not being able to restart with all extensions off is (a) a big deal or
(b) has a workaround. Usually one is told to restart with all extensions
off when installing new software. Would switching all extensions off
with Now Startup Manager be just as good?
I need to make up my mind fairly rapidly whether to keep the monitor or
go back to my Apple FPD. All advice gratefully received.
Graeme Forbes
PS: According to Radius, (i) theirs is the only 3rd party 21" mono
monitor that can use the Q700's internal video - apparently Apple
deliberately designed the circuitry not to work with 3rd party
screens; and (ii) more recent Quadras don't have the same problem.

Hi all,
A while back there was a MAC + screen reverser in the archives,
which is no longer there. I saw a request for it recently, so I think
it's still around. Of course, now that I need it I can't find it! If
anyone has a copy I'd appreciate it greatly if you could send it to me

Subject: Seeking mgt. software for an encyclopedia-type project.
Does anyone have a recommendation for software that exists for
managing a project that involves production of a small encyclopedia?
That is, it should be able to;
* track status of contributors, both potential and confirmed,
incl. their name, address, and nature of their contribution.
* manage the actual contributions, including both text files
and graphic files.
* track reviewers and editors who are assigned to work on
specific contributions.
* ideally allow assembly and production, or interface to production,
of drafts of the actual encyclopedia.
In some ways this reminds me of the tools that exist for management
of code on applications development projects, but it is not really
the same thing. Maybe there are two or three existing tools that
would work well in combination? If you post directly to me, I will
summarize back to info-mac.

We are currently evaluating Thunder 7, and it seems that Fetch and Thunder 7
sometimes "share" menu items: the Shortcuts > menu in Fetch sometimes get

Any Fetch-savvy folk out there that have this problem? Any Fetch-folk from
Dartmouth interested in fixing this with Baseline?

+But yes, the power here is a bit flaky too (Seattle metropolitan area)
+and after that incident, I bought a $342 APC 370ci uninterruptable
+power supply that I like a great deal. I've never had the slightest
+concern since then, because every time the power goes out long enough,
+the UPS kicks in. I can't count how many times it's done this, especially
+with the quick drops that can really hurt things.
I'd just like to interject at this point that my UPS is probably one
of the best hardware investments I ever made. I got a bargain-basement
TrippLite BC-450 at a local PC superstore for only $249 (or was it
$199... it was cheap), and I couldn't begin to tell you how many
times my equipment has been saved from unplanned shutdowns and
restarts or worse.
My UPS has only had problems once, when I wasn't in my apartment. I
came back to find that something had blown both fuses between the
charger and the batteries, so the batteries wouldn't recharge. At the
same time, a TrippLite ISOBAR 4-outlet surge suppressor had been fried
and was still smoking when I came found it.
The UPS was undamaged; I went to the local Radio Shack and picked up
$1.00 of new fuses, and it was as good as new.
In the life of my computers (SE/30 and IIfx), I've never connected
them directly to the wall power... I always used a UPS or surge
suppressor. The only thing I didn't protect with a surge suppresor,
until recently, was my modem & phone line. I don't have that modem
anymore, it got fried in a thunderstorm. Now I protect my phone line
to.
So the moral of this story is that a UPS can save your work and your
machines.

Subject: Viruses...new Mac user!
Apologies go out in advance if this is a FAQ. I've looked around,
and can't see anythign on the subject. Here goes: I bought a Mac 5 weeks
ago after using DOS compatibles for 10 years. I've been aware of what DOS
viruses are, how to detect em, get rid of em, etc. I know 'how' DOS systems
should act, and what constitutes unusual behavior. I've not developed this
6th sense with the Mac( yet ).
What constitutes some signs of virii, what are the most likely viruses
I'd get hit with( if they are common at all ), and what are the best programs
out there to use to detect or eradicate viruses? I've got Disinfectant 3.2(
and
use it ), and Gatekeeper( but have no idea how to set it up ).
Thanks for any and all replies. Eh...email me at
tdavie@ccu.umanitoba.ca
if you'd like, or post some response here. If it seems warranted, and if I can
figure out how, I'll try to summarize.

You may have to purchase Adobe's PSPrinter package (their version of LW 8.0)
and install the driver from there. Also, the auto-setup routine can recognise
several models which are identical, such as the RealTech and the LZR960 and
install the appropriate driver for both.

I called Now and they confirm that a demo version of 2.0
exists on AOL. Sumex-info-mac only has v 1.0.

Subject: Drawing electronic circuits.
Hi! everybody.
In our laboratory, even if it is not my main job, I often have to design
and build simple or "mid-complex" electronics circuits. I know that
there exist sophisticated software, not only to draw but to compute
and simulate behavior of electronic circuits too. At that time,
considering our needs, these software are too much expensive
(few thousands dollars). I would like to find a good Macintosh
software, only for drawing electronic circuits (if it can do more,
it is O.K. but I must consider price and ease of use).
I would greatly appreciate if someone have any suggestions.
Thank you very much!
